The home lab
A mini PC running Proxmox and a NAS, reachable from outside only through Tailscale
Situation
Talking about your own servers is easy, running them is not. The work sits in what never appears in a vendor presentation. Updates and backups, for instance, or how to reach the machines while away without exposing anything to the open internet.
Approach
A mini PC with Proxmox as the hypervisor, plus a NAS for storage and backups. Nothing is open to the outside. Neither the mini PC nor the NAS has a port forwarded in the router, and access from away runs through Tailscale only. I do not run a DNS service of my own; this setup does not need one.
Outcome
An environment to try things out that holds up in everyday use. And the experience of what operation costs even at this size. A service is set up in an hour and is someone's job from then on.
